Sources said inputs from intelligence agencies suggested that the apps have been ignore the terms of usage, trading off users security, and being used as spyware or malware. Close to the announcement, the Indian government’s TikTok account MyGov, which had 1.1 million supporters, was disabled.

The move comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India has given a “befitting reaction” to China. He also spoke the countrywide call for boycott of Chinese products, comparing it against the government’s “Atma Nirbhar Bharat” battle. “We will buy local and be vocal for local and this will help India become stronger,” he said.
In a statement, the government said the apps were blocked “taking into account data available they are engaged in activities which is sloping to power and trustworthiness of India, defence  of India, security of state and public order.”
The statement from the Ministry of Electronics and Information and Technology said it had received an  “comprehensive proposal” from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The ministry said it also got representations from people on “security of information and risk to protection” in regards to certain apps.

“The collection of these data, its mining and profiling by components enemy to national security and defence of India, which at last encroaches upon the sway and justice of India, is a matter of very deep and quick concern which requires emergency measures. At the same time, there have been  raging concerns on angles identifying with data security and defending the protection of 130 crore Indians,” said the release.
The move comes in the midst of a countrywide call from brokers and common society to  boycott Chinese products and services after the June 15 clashes. The government had contributed with a bar on Chinese equipment for the 4G upgradation of the state-possessed Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and sacking of a Chinese firm that had a Rs 471-crore railways contract.
A Last week, the government also made the notice of the “Nation of Origin” mandatory for sellers listing their products in the Government e-Marketplace – a move that is relied upon to add to the chances against Chinese products. E-commerce companies  including Amazon and Flipkart, have chosen to go with the same pattern.

Experts suggested that the ban on apps is a major hit to China’s Digital Silk Route ambitions, disintegrating a large number of dollars from valuation of its companies. This could also lead to more countries following India’s way in acting against these Apps.

“The Narender Modi’s government shows its large determination and finesse of drawing in China on various fronts and hitting China where it harms the most,” said a party source. “This is India’s first salvo to China after the border clashes, showing that India has a different scope of retaliatory options,” he added.
